This is how the International Adolph Kolping Foundation helps:
When foreigners become parents – help for aids orphans in Tanzania |
Each year 150,000 people in Tanzania die of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome Aids. About seven percent of all children are Aids orphans, almost one million children under fifteen years of age must grow up without their parents. Many of them are infected with HIV from birth. In the past orphans found protection and help in the extended families but today they are overburdened because many family members also have Aids. Very often a single grandmother raises seven grandchildren because her own children died of Aids.
The Kolping Society of Tanzania cares for these children. Thanks to the donations from the International Adolph Kolping Foundation, the Kolping Society tries to maintain the familiar surroundings and tries to accommodate them by relatives or friends. If this is not possible they try to find foreign foster parents who are willing to care for the children. The children are also included into a health program. In cooperation with the schools Kolping carries out educational work about the risk of infection and protection measures.
Since the foster families are usually also poor, they are supported. This includes food for the families and the foster children and the financing of school education of both, the own children and the foster children. In a common effort the families and Kolping look for opportunities to improve the long-term economic situation of the families. This may include giving small livestock to initiate a small livestock breeding or help to open up a small shop. To increase the chances of success the parents always participate in educational measures for the promotion of professional skills. In addition, and this is very important for children who have lost their own parents, the whole family has somebody to contact. This person maintains regular contact to the family and helps in situations of conflict.
