Debt crisis slowing down achievement of sustainability development goals by 2030
On 18-19 September 2023, the SDG Summit took place in New York, marking the half-way point to the deadline set for achieving the 2030 agenda. In 2015, the leaders of 193 countries had agreed on 17 sustainable development goals to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. Peace, justice and the protection of the planet should be promoted. However, the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and rising inflation have set the world back in achieving these goals.
“When the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015, hopes were high that they would eradicate global poverty by 2030. Now, at the half-way point, we unfortunately know that this will not be possible”, said General Secretary Dr. Markus Demele. ” However, we must not slow down: politics, business, society – each and every individual must contribute to ensuring that this rich planet feeds all people and gives them equal opportunities!”
Poor countries are becoming increasingly indebted as a result of the global economic crisis. Therefore, the “Jubilee Germany” alliance requests that the management of the global debt crisis is recognized as a major key to the achievement of the SDGs!
